Questions & Answers

Here are answers to some questions you may have:

  1. How much will this cost? Right now we estimate the cost between $1,900 and $2,100 (this includes airfare, room/board and the cost of the project, which would be about $500/person) As a group, we would also like to work on raising extra funds, which would pay for work to continue after we are gone.
  1. When will the trip be? Travel Dates: June 7-16, 2013

  1. What exactly will you be doing? In addition to volunteering at the local orphanage and visiting other ministries to see where God is working in Shell, there are several projects that currently need to be done at the hospital.  Eric has videos about many of them.  We would like to have students take ownership by voting on a project that they would like to work on, then raising funds in order to accomplish the work.

  1. How will you connect with community there? We will have opportunities, such as soccer games and community dinners, to interact with locals once we are there. In terms of community service, Eric will prepare students in advance.  For example, we cannot simply walk into an orphanage and play with kids.  Eric will work to prepare the group as we will have to spend some time learning about the people and the culture before we interact.

  1. Who will be chaperoning the students?  At lleast two HCHS teachers to chaperone.  Amanda Cisneros and Andrea Schuitema are planning to do this.  Other Spanish teachers may consider chaperoning as well.

  1. How long will the trip be? 10 days  Here is a tentative itinerary:

  • Day one- arrive in Quito, drive one hour to spend the night in a guest house and enjoy hot springs in Papallacta.
  • Day two- take a 5 hour bus ride to Shell and become acquainted with the town and the Fogg family
  • Days three to seven- service/vision working with hospital, orphanage and water projects
  • Day eight- overnight in Baños, nearby community with opportunities hiking, canyoning & rafting
  • Day nine- travel to Quito, see some sights
  • Day ten- return home
  •  Will you do any fundraising? Students will be responsible for their own airfare, room and board.  We are considering doing some school-wide fundraisers to cover the cost of the actual projects that we work on.  We welcome parents to organize additional fundraisers.
